PROVIDENCE ISLAND
Providence begins in color: turquoise shallows, yellow bridges, palms leaning into the last light. My photographs are a love letter to the island—and an invitation to look beneath its beauty. The Providence Island Company, founded in 1630, brought English Puritan settlers aboard the Sea Flower in 1631. Their venture became a frontier of faith, trade, privateering and enslaved African labor before Spain conquered the colony in 1641. In 1670, Henry Morgan, the famous pirate and privateer, seized Providence and Santa Catalina before his Panama campaign. On Santa Catalina, the natural rock formation known as Morgan’s Head carries his name into the landscape. These ten photographs follow that meeting of history and living place: stone, sea, everyday color, and light that refuses to stand still.
