RODRIGO BLANCO FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY

THE MAN BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPHS

Between art
and science.

I've always been drawn to two different ways of understanding the world: the precision of science and the freedom of art. Photography is where they meet.

My name is Rodrigo Blanco. I was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, on the Caribbean coast. I've spent much of my life trying to understand not only how the world works, but also why certain moments move us. Curiosity has taken me down more than one road; photography is the one that has allowed those roads to converge.

As a young man, I studied computer science in Colombia and explored physics. I was fascinated by logic, mathematics, patterns, and the invisible structures behind the things we see. That part of me has never disappeared. I still notice geometry in a coastline, symmetry in architecture, and the extraordinary ways in which light can turn an ordinary scene into something unforgettable.

In 1990, I moved to the United States. I later served in the U.S. Navy, an experience that broadened my horizons in every sense of the word. Life at sea taught me to appreciate distance, scale, discipline, and the quiet power of looking out toward something much larger than myself.

Boston eventually became my home. Here I studied photography at the New England School of Photography, where I learned to give my curiosity a visual language. The camera offered me a remarkable meeting point: science encouraged me to investigate what I saw, while art invited me to interpret what I felt.

For more than two decades, I have worked across portraiture, weddings, travel, and documentary photography. Photographing people taught me to recognize the truth in a fleeting gesture. Photographing landscapes taught me patience. In either case, the most memorable image often depends on something no photographer can command: a glance, a passing cloud, or a few seconds of exceptional light.

Today, my attention is drawn especially to fine-art photography. I am interested in more than recording a beautiful place. I search for composition, atmosphere, stillness, and the details that make someone pause. Whether I am photographing the understated elegance of Nantucket or the extraordinary colors of autumn in New England, I want my images to offer an experience rather than a simple description.

But my life is not defined by a camera alone. I have been married for 30 years, and my wife and I are the parents of three children. Being a husband and a father has taught me as much about patience, love, change, and the passage of time as any journey or classroom. It is also a constant reminder of why moments matter—and why we wish we could hold on to some of them a little longer.

I live in the Boston area, but I carry my Colombian roots and the Caribbean with me wherever I go. At this stage of my life, I remain as curious as ever. I don't pretend to have found all the answers; in fact, I hope I never do. There is still so much to observe, to learn, and to photograph.

“The part of me that loves science looks for order. The part that loves art remains open to surprise.”
